To ensure the security and safety of all transactions, all the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is regulated by the Reserve Bank India. The NPCI has set UPI transaction limits.
UPI is a digital payment system that facilitates instant digital fund transfer between two accounts. UPI is a unifying platform that brings several banks under a single platform and brings all bank accounts directly to the users’ mobile devices.
The NPCI has set the UPI transaction limit. Currently, the UPI transaction limit is INR 1 Lakh. That means the maximum amount you will be able to transfer in a single UPI transaction is INR 1 lakh. As per the circular issued by the NPCI in March last year, the UPI transaction limit was raised to INR 2 lakh for ‘verified merchants’, amongst other specified use cases.
Also, the total number of UPI transactions you can do in a day is typically limited to 20. This limit varies across banks. Note that the UPI transaction limits change from time to time. For instance, most well-established banks have done away with the limits on the number of UPI transactions per day.
Under the NPCI limit, banks could set their own UPI transaction limits. They can do this to offer their customers even more protection. Consequently, some banks have exercised their authority and lowered the UPI transaction cap on their customers. Hence, the limits for UPI transactions vary across banks. Depending on the bank, it could be anywhere from INR 10,000 to INR 1 lakh.
For instance, the maximum amount you could transfer in a single transaction using the BHIM UPI app is INR 1 lakh, and you could only transfer to a maximum of INR 1 lakh in a day. Similarly, banks in India too have set their per day and transaction limits. If you are done with your maximum allowed limit or number of transactions, you will not be able to make any more UPI transactions for the day.
The following are some of the per-transaction limits set by banks, and the per-day UPI transaction limit:
